Have First Person Games Created a New Expectation For Lavish Homes?
First person point of view (POV) in games allow people to experience life in new ways. Whether that’s through horror games like Five Nights At Freddys or explorer games such as Death Stranding, there’s something for everyone in the first-person adventure. However, has seeing through the lens of these virtual lives warper our own perception and expectations of reality? Let’s take a look.
Expense and affordability
One thing video games can make seem really easy is making money. Games such as Slime Rancher can involve just collecting valuables and selling them for profit, sometimes not even needing to spend any money to do so. This leads to an excess amount of money that can be spent on frivolous items or house decor, allowing players to own the most expensive and lavish items they can.
But unfortunately real life isn’t so simple, and spending time on a game where you have everything you want versus the reality of your one bed flat can be quite depressing for some. This is especially so when looking online and seeing how much a lavish house can actually cost, and how long it would take to save up for one.
In most games where buying a house is an option, there’s usually a guarantee that you can get one, however reality isn’t so kind. For someone who wants to get their money’s worth it can be extremely costly and time consuming trying to find the right home, and even more so when they’re wanting something a little more extravagant. And even when finally owning your own home, sometimes it’s not the dreamhouse you wanted because that cost too much.
The closest some people may get to this is by experiencing it through their first person POV in games. Or perhaps you have found a house which is perfect, but its in a location that is inconvenient to you. This is where you could sell your house and rent it back. One thing that is quite common in games as well is how large some of the homes can be. The horror game Visage is a good example of this, as the house in this game is vast with multiple rooms, 4 floors, and it is completely decked out too, and seems to be placed in a neighbourhood with similar size homes around it. In reality, most homes are not this large or filled with so much stuff, and you certainly wouldn’t get a whole neighbourhood of this quality. But the first person perspective in game can distort this idea, especially when you then include first person pov in virtual reality too, where you are fully able to live and experience these settings you’re placed in, and interact with them.
Due to the need to have a large space for players to move in in video games, this has also enforced the idea that houses are supposed to be large, you are supposed to have lots of space to explore and rooms dedicated to one purpose only. This means people want to look for homes that replicate this idea, and this increases the demand for them, meaning more luxury homes are being built or renovated.
First-person perspective video games are not to be entirely blamed for these ideas and expectations, as a lot of games involve these dynamics in homes. However, first person does allow the player to experience this house in a similar way to which they would experience a real one. This can lead to disappointment when they realise these homes are out of their budget, or just plainly not realistic, and they may instead have to settle for an apartment for the time being, and hopefully work their way to the lavish house that they wanted.
